Turkish Medical Student, Edzhem Tombash, on Observing Dr. Camran Nezhat

The opportunity to observe Dr. Nezhat for 2 months was an important point in my life. Prior to this, I had heard about endometriosis a few years ago when I recorded patient education videos with an OBGYN in Turkey. Even though I found it very interesting, the estimated incidence of 1 in 10 seemed unrealistic.

However, in these two months, I learned that women are often forced to believe painful periods, excessive discomfort during sexual intercourse, and persistent pelvic/abdominal pain is normal and should be tolerated. I was also surprised to find out that endometriosis isn’t commonly investigated as cause of women’s infertility. The most difficult part of endometriosis to witness is how a woman can physically and mentally wear out because society does not believe her pain, or doctors do not suspect her symptoms.

It is very sad that 1 in 10 women have this disease and knowing that it can affect life very negatively. But it is pleasing to know that it can be easily solved in expert hands after proper diagnosis.

During my time with Dr. Nezhat, I've known so many women whose life has changed from the first step they took to the clinic then the operating room and post-operative controls. Even though I was a medical student, I wanted to do something about it. While thinking about what I could do, it was not difficult to realize that the biggest shortcomings on this issue was awareness and education. I decided that the best solution would be to train general practitioners, residents, and medical students. In other words, to instill this awareness in the process of learning the profession.

With the support of Dr. Nezhat we have put together a program that we can use to create awareness for both doctors and society while visiting medical faculties across Europe starting from Turkey with volunteer OBGYNs to teach about endometriosis.

Our goal is to advance it to the next levels across countries. As a future OBGYN, I cannot tolerate the suffering of anyone for many years for a disease which is treatable in expert hands.

I hope endometriosis will be in every doctor's mind while searching for an answer, and the diagnosis time will not prolong anymore...

Dr. Nezhat’ı gözlemleme fırsatı bulduğum iki ay hayatımda bir dönüm noktası oldu. Birkaç yıl önce Kadın hastalıkları ve doğum uzmanı bir hocamla hasta eğitim videoları kaydettiğimizde endometriosis ilgimi çekmiş olsa da istatistiksel olarak tahmin edilen görülme sıklığı gerçekçi gelmemişti. Ancak bu iki ayda hastaların; ağrılı adetlerin, aşırı rahatsızlık hissi veren cinsel ilişkinin, geçmeyen pelvik/abdominal ağrının  normal ve katlanılması gerektiğine inandırıldıklarını, çocuk sahibi olmalarının önündeki engelin bu olabileceğinin araştırılmadığını gördüm. En zoru da Endometriozis’in; bir kadını, kendisine inanmayan bir toplum ya da belirtilerden şüphelenmeyen bir doktorun nasıl fiziksel ve mental olarak yıpratabileceğine şahit oldum. 10 kadından 1’inde olduğu varsayılan ve hayatı bu derece olumsuz etkileyen bir hastalığın tanısı konduktan sonra uzman ellerde kolaylıkla çözülebildiğini görmek ise hem üzücü hem de sevindiriciydi.

Dr. Nezhat’ın yanında bulunduğum sürede kliniğe attıkları ilk adımdan ameliyathaneye ve ameliyat sonrası kontrollere uzanan süreçte hayatı değişen o kadar çok kadın tanıdım ki henüz tıp fakültesi öğrencisi olmama rağmen bu konuda bir şeyler yapmak istedim.

Ne yapabileceğimi düşünürken bu konudaki en büyük eksikliğin ise toplumsal farkındalık ve eğitim olduğunu fark etmek zor olmadı. Buna en iyi çözümün ise pratisyen doktorları, asistanları ve tıp fakültesi öğrencilerini eğitmenin, yani henüz mesleği öğrendikleri süreçte bu bilinci aşılamanın olacağına karar verdim. Dr. Nezhat’ın da desteğiyle Türkiye’den başlayarak Avrupa genelinde gönüllü hocalarımızla tıp fakültelerini gezerek endometriozisi anlatabileceğimiz ve hem toplum hem de doktorlar için farkındalık yaratabileceğimiz bir program hazırladık.

Bundan sonraki amacımız da bunu büyüterek ilerlemek. Bir doktor adayı olarak tedavisi olan bir hastalık sebebiyle kimsenin uzun yıllar acı çekmesine göz yumamadığım gibi temennim bir gün her doktorun aklının bir köşesinde  endometriozis şüphesinin olması ve teşhis süresinin bu denli uzamaması...
